Peppermint Stick insect Megacrania batesii
Sold as juveniles – Captive Bred
A rather unusual species, Peppermint stick insects live in the fronds of pandanus plants in the wild, where they lay flat against the leaves. They have a rather unusual secondary defence mechanism, spraying an irritating liquid when disturbed. The spray smells akin to peppermint, hence their common name.
Adult Body Length Female 10cm Male 9cm
Foodplants Pandanus (including the cultivated variety Pandan)
Notes
Given their rather restrictive diet, please ensure you have access to adequate pandanus/pandan plants before considering keeping this species.
Due to their ability to spray irritating liquid in self defence, care must be taken when working with this species.
